Why do I get the error message "Trial is not configured" or "You need to be associated to Trial ID xxx" when trying to access a trial download?

I was forwarded a trial from another person to install on my machine, but when I go to download the trial I get an error message that the "Trial is not configured." or "We are unable to provide access to Trial ID". How do I install and activate this trial?

Trials are locked to the MathWorks account of the user who requested the trial.
If someone forwards you a trial, you will need the sender to add you as the licensed end user for the trial before the trial number will show up as a choice in the activation client.
