I created a MATLAB project in MATLAB R2020b. I wanted to open it in R2019a, but received the following error message:
Error using open (line 146)
Could not load the project at
C:\Users\MATLAB\Projects
No project found in root folder.
Why?

The default definition type for the project created in R2020b is changed to "FixedPathMultiFile". If you would like to open it in R2019a, you have to convert the project definition files to a format available back in R2019a using the following function with the "definitionType" argument equal to "matlab.project.DefinitionFiles.MultiFile":
matlab.project.convertdefinitionfiles(projectRoot,matlab.project.DefinitionFiles.MultiFile)

Similarly, for Simulink Projects, please use the following function to convert the project:
Simulink.exportToVersion

For me, it's
matlab.project.convertDefinitionFiles
(note the upper case letters)
The rest works though. Cheers!
