The state-space input matrices to the 'ss' command should all be numeric and have the following size relationships:
A: p x p
B: p x q
C: r x p
D: r x q

Without seeing the contents of your variables A,B,C,D it is impossible to guess the reason.
As usual the debugger is a good idea whenever an error occurs:
dbstop if error
Then start your program again until it stops at the failing line. Then inspect the local variables to find out, why the function state() is called with a CHAR as input.
