Is Home version an annual-basis or one-time purchase?

46 views (last 30 days)
Good morning,
  • Would you kindly inform me about the Home version capabilities ?
  • For new users of Mathworks (MATLAB + SIMULINK) Home version, is this version sufficient, as a start, to get familiar to the apps and to build idea-based projects till deciding to upgrade to Startup version?
  • Providing further information on your part will be gratefull !
Thanks in advance for any answer and feedback.
Kind regards,
Mudhar

For your first question does the MATLAB Home product page (and the FAQ at the end of that page) provide you with sufficient information about its capabilities? If not do you have specific questions not addressed there?
For your second question, the last item in the FAQ on that page ("What is the difference between home and professional version of MATLAB and Simulink?") lists the differences between the versions. The main difference with respect to the MATLAB product family is that some add-ons are not available; there are a few more differences with respect to the Simulink product family.
If you have further questions there's a section on that page where you can email the product manager for MATLAB Home.

There are two ways of purchasing MATLAB product licenses:
  • term licenses. These are available for "standard" (also called "professional" or "commercial") licenses, and for Academic licences, and MOOC licenses. Historically they were also available for Student licenses; I do not know if they still are. I do not know if they are available for Home licenses. term licenses are valid for the contracted period, after which the licenses stop working
  • perpetual licenses. These are available for "standard" and Academic and Student and Home licenses. perpetual licenses are valid forever but only for that release . Note, though, that although Student licenses are valid forever (for that release), that Student licenses are only valid during the time the owner is enrolled in an appropriate post-secondary institution. If they leave or graduate then the license is suspended until they enroll in an appropriate educational instution at a later date, at which point they can resume using the license.
As well, if you have Software Maintenance Service (SMS), then you are entitled to use any new version of your already-purchased products that are released during the time the SMS is valid. "standard" and Academic and Student and Home perpetual license purchases include 1 year of SMS with the purchase.
SMS can be renewed indefinitely by paying a fee.
So, you can purchase a perpetual Home license, currently for R2022b, and that would include 1 year of SMS in the purchase price, so when R2023a and R2023b are released then the SMS would entitle you to upgrade to those. A year from now you would be asked whether you want to pay for SMS. If you choose not to pay, you would continue to be eligible to use R2022a and those R2023b releases (because they were released while you were covered by SMS), but you would not be eligible to upgrade to R2024a or later releases. If you choose to pay for SMS then that would continue your upgrade eligibility for the period covered.
