Why am I unable to display ASCII characters between 128 and 255 in MATLAB 6.5 (R13) on Linux?

When I attempt to insert ASCII characters between 128 and 255 such as the degree symbol into figures as labels, MATLAB hangs.

        The ability to insert ASCII characters between 128 and 255 into MATLAB is not available in MATLAB 6.5 (R13).
To work around this issue, it is necessary to set the $LANG environmental variable to specify an 8-bit character set. For example, use the following C shell command:
 setenv LANG c
This allows the use of ASCII characters between 128 and 255.
