Does the Mapping Toolbox support Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data?

I would like to know if the Mapping Toolbox supports Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data.

The Mapping Toolbox imports and exports generic GIS data in several formats, including shapefile, TIFF/JPEG/PNG with world files, GeoTIFF (read only), and ARC ASCII Grid (read only) and it imports from various more specialized formats (DTED, USGS DEM, SDTS DEM, etc.). Please run the following command in the MATLAB Command Window to obtain the release specific documentation:
web(fullfile(docroot, 'map/find-geospatial-data-online.html'))
