How did you check if the number of indices on the left matches the number of columns on the right?

What is size(data{i}.X ? If it does not have exactly L elements then the assignment would fail.

What is the value of L ? If it is not 2 then you have a problem. data{i}.X(j,:) would be a vector of length 2 on the right hand side, and the code you posted designates a vector of length L on the left side.
