I am unable to start up MatLab on my laptop. I was running it succesfully all last fall, but now when I try to start the program it "flashes on" as though its going to start but then immediately closes. Do I need some kind of renewal or update?

I have the same problem sometimes. On my computer this is caused by a wrong target location of my desktop shortcut. The shortcut thinks my matlab folder is saved on my C disk but it is on my D disk. Is this also your problem?

Are you using Catalina? Catalina is known to have startup problems. Some people are able to start it from the binary with the -nodesktop option.
If you are using Catalina and have any accessibility services enabled including Magnet or Default Folder X, then try disabling those
