Identifying a problem with fopen

So I'm trying to use MATLAB to analyze a .c3d file (I don't know how many of you are familiar with OptiTrack ARENA). I want to open the file using fopen, and open it in it's native format. However, fopen cannot open the file for some reason. Is there a way to find out why, and possibly rectify the situation? I'm still not entirely sure whether the problem is on the MATLAB or ARENA end, but help me out here.

If you use
[fid, msg] = fopen('TheName.c3d', 'r');
then what msg is returned ?

Ah, there we go. It told me that the file couldn't be found, and I know why. Apparently I was in the wrong directory and didn't notice it, so the file couldn't be opened. I fixed it, and now msg is just an empty string. Thanks. The program still doesn't work, but it's not because of fopen now.
