Facing the same issue! I am not running any script and MATLAB does not seem to run anything on the foreground either. Ctrl+C does not return my control to the command window. But it does seem like MATLAB is executing something in the background and when I try to close the MATLAB application it says that an operation is in progress. Restarting MATLAB and PC didn't help!
Does anyone here have a lead?

Some Matlab versions seems to stuck, if a disconnected network or cloud folder is included in the PATH.
The question and the descriptions in the comments do not contain enough information to understand the problem. How long did you wait? What happens before Matlab goes into the busy mode? Does startup.m contain commands, whoich do not stop? What does happen, when you press Ctrl-C? Which Matlab version are you using?

Same happens with my versions. I used r2022a and hoped to fix it by using r2021a. Both of them fail to even startup. The matlab window appears, but then nothing more is possible. And if i maximize the window, it becomes black. Sometimes things work, if i really wait long. E.g. having opened matlab and doing something else, and suddenly matlab was then able to load the workspace....

Since I have no network drives, i dont think there are some in my path. R2021 is a fresh installation. The R2022, i installed in may 2022. Both don't work now. Recently i changed something for texstudio, since the memory it can use was limited and that was not enough for my project. But this may or may not be the reaseon...
My most recent observation: When i startup matlab, at first the textcurser blinks (where you enter function, or variable values), and i can type in some text, but after 2 seconds, the curser freezes, and nothing more is possible. The shut down works then only via task manager....

...again a new observation: I can open single values of my workspace. And also more than one variable (s.t. more variables chosen with the shift key) However it always comes to a problem, when i want to load idgrey modells or iddata objects. I can create them afterwards, when part of my workspace is loaded.
