Sliding mode observer gain

I have a nonlinear system model that I try to observe using 2nd order sliding mode observer. However I try to find the proper gain to redcued amount of error. Anyone that can suggest how I can do it. I believe that I have to linearize both observer and the plant but look for proper gains like in linear case. any thoughts?
