Servos not responding to buttons on Vex Joystick regularly.

We have code for a claw that opens left and right fingers separately - open for one button and close on a second button. The students also added a button that opens and closes both claws - a single button is pushed to open, same button is pushed to close. We are finding that as we open and close fingers on the claw the action of the button is sluggish and will frequently not register opening and closing of the claw. When a display block is placed between the gamepad button block and the math subsystem that we created to our own specifications we find that the delay still exists. Is there some delay between the time that the joystick button is pressed that is fixed - or can we somehow change that delay?
