Different plots sometimes require different specifications for 'LineStyle' and 'Marker'.
The long dash is the '--' 'LineStyle'.
For example:
x = linspace(0, 2*pi, 250);
y = sin(x);
figure(1)
plot(x, y, '--')
grid
