if i consider i=1:1000, what does ':' mean in x(i,:)

In a for loop what does : mean in x(i,:) if i consider i=1:1000??
my coding is:
t=20
for i=1:t
error(i,:)= errornew
end
Please help.

It means that the first 20 rows of the matrix "error" are set to the vector "errornew".
