Mode function not working

I am trying to use the mode function in Matlab version 7.9.0 (R2009b) and it keeps giving me the same errors even when I enter examples from Matlab help. Is it possible to change the code myself or am I doing something wrong?

What example code did you run and what error message?

It would help if you were to indicate exactly what error you see.
Please command
which -all mode
and check to see whether MATLAB is picking up a mode.m file other than the MATLAB supplied one, which should be in
toolbox/matlab/datafun/mode.m
