Error handling in StandAlone Matlab Applications. Adding a listener for the MException class?

When a standalone application (compiled with the Matlab Compiler) encounters an error, the error is printed to the DOS shell. This is particularly problematic since the DOS shell is often suppressed in standalone application.
I would like to change this behavior and implement my own error handling routing, and create a small popup window displaying the error message.
I consider using a try – catch scheme to do so, but this does not work well as the error could reside in various portions of the application (callbacks, timers, etc).
Is there a listener I can attached to the MException class, or something similar?
