I'm getting the following error on start-up:
"Error using Settings Undefined function or variable 'matlab.internal.getSettingsRoot'.
Error in matlabrc (line 184) s = Settings;"
The relevant code in matlabrc is
% Initial Working folder if ~(ismcc isdeployed feature('isdmlworker')) && usejava('jvm') s = Settings; switch s.matlab.workingfolder.InitialWorkingFolder
"% Initial Working folder if ~(ismcc isdeployed feature('isdmlworker')) && usejava('jvm') s = Settings; switch s.matlab.workingfolder.InitialWorkingFolder"

Try issuing this command (save your original PATH to a .mat file if you care about wanting to be able to recreate it):
restoredefaultpath

I was having a similar problem and I realized that the pathdef file was shadowed in my data/script storage folder as well as the MATLAB application folder. The problem resolved when I deleted the extraneous file in the data storage folder.
