Matlab 2013b on Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) opens but does not respond to any mouse or key presses

I recently upgraded to Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and upgraded to Matlab 2013b as well.
It ran fine in the first 2-3 days but has become unresponsive to any key or mouse presses. I did some research and found that previous Matlab versions had some problems with recent Java updates. I have Java 1.6.0_65, which is the latest update so it should be compatible with 2013b, I'd think.
Also, Matlab does still run from the command line, so it really seems to be the GUI that is not responsive to any input. Someone know what is going on and how I can fix this?

update: if I run 'ver' in the command line I get:
--------------------------------------------------------
MATLAB Version: 8.2.0.701 (R2013b)
MATLAB License Number: ••••••
Operating System: Mac OS X Version: 10.9 Build: 13A603
Java Version: Java is not enabled
--------------------------------------------------------
So it seems indeed a Java issue, how to fix this?

downgraded Java fixed it but not ideal. Mathworks: make matlab 2013b compatible with newest Jave for Mac please.

Download earlier version of Java for Mac: http://apple-java-for-mac.en.softonic.com/mac/download)
Use Pacifist (<http://www.charlessoft.com>) to open the Apple Java package and install using the install option. This allows you to install the earlier version, which is not possible otherwise.
Note that this is a workaround, I would still prefer an official solution by Mathworks.
