I created an m-file on windows matlab. Is it possible to somehow run this file on a linux system? And if so, how can this be done?

m-files are just source text files so as long as the version on the Linux system is new enough compared to the version under which the Windows m-file(s) run(s) there should be no problems other than those of anything which is OS-specific (like shell commands or the like).

Or if a feature is used that is only supported on Windows, such as anything more than the basic subset of xlsread()

You can get an MS Windows emulator for Linux.
