Reading ASCII values from serial COM port

Hi all I tried reading ASCII values from barcode scanner(through serial port) into ML using the following program

delete(instrfind)
s = serial('COM5');
fopen(s)
[tline1,count1,msg1] = fgetl(s)
fclose(s)

but its not working

Can you help me in resolving the issue.

I know that the barcode code scanner communicates using ASCII.
