Can you write to an Excel file from Matlab Online using xlswrite?

I just tried it. It created an .csv file.
>> xlswrite('book1',magic(5))
Warning: Could not start Excel server for export.
XLSWRITE will attempt to write file in CSV format.

No. MATLAB Online uses Linux, which is restricted to 'basic' for xlswrite(), and 'basic' ignores the file extension and writes a csv file instead.
You should use writetable() instead.
