Default JVM does not seem to be working - Ubuntu 14.04

For some reason MATLAB doesn't start with default JVM.
echo $MATLAB_JAVA gives me /usr/lib/jvm/jre1.7.0_60/
If I change that to /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre, then matlab starts fine.
I put export MATLAB_JAVA=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre in my /etc/bash.bashrc, but somethign else must be overriding it after the fact.
Why is the default JVM not working, and if I can't get it to work, how can I automatically set MATLAB_JAVA? I don't want my users to have to export MATLAB_JAVA every time they need to launch matlab.
Thanks,

I edited the matlab invocation command to export the correct MATLAB_JAVA path as a fix. Seems to work ok, but I feel this may not be the 'proper' fix.
