What do you want to fill the gap with? A uniform color, like white? If so...
grayImage(row1:row2, col1:col2) = 255;

What is the name of your image variable? Replace my "grayImage" with your variable name. What rows and columns do you need replacing? Just assign them to row1, row2, col1, and col2.
