Matlab R2011b on Mac OS X, frequent spinning beachball
Show older comments
During my working day it happens approximately 2-3 times that matlab gets stuck with the spinning ball, at which point I have to kill the app and restart. I have not noticed any pattern or possible behavious that may cause this. Does anyone have any idea how to solve or debug this?
Thanks

Huh, this is a very vage description of the problem. Perhaps you can add the version of the OS and some further details. e.g. if Matlab is installed locally or if it is running from a license server, if it appears after printing or during computations, etc.

I have seen some reports of MATLAB R2011b hanging on Lion, but no-one seems to have found any common elements yet, just "it hangs".

Me too...
I am running Matlab R2011b on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Matlab is crashing every 1-2 hours when working in the main window (e.g. dragging a scrollbar, typing, pressing ESC, etc). Several colleagues of mine running with same configurations experience the same problem. This is VERY annoying.
I will post a backtrace when it crashes next time.

I'm running Matlab R2011b on MAC OSX 10.6.8 and it works just fine. I have been running it continuously for last 6 days without a restart. I see slowness in the behaviour when i have the job monitor running and it is auto updating every few minutes.. I have set it for 5 mins or I usually disable it when Im not running any jobs on the cluster.
FYI I have an IMAC - i7, .293 GHz, 8GB ram..

Not sure if it's the same issue, but I experienced some major problems with the Matlab and the latest release of Java (1.6.0)... lots of crashes with no explanation, and often empty stack traces in the accompanying crash report. Rolling back to a previous version of Java (1.5.0) solved those crashes.
Of course, I'm running older everything, so it may be a different issue. My specs: Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard), Matlab R2010a, Java 1.5.0_30-b03 (rolled back from 1.6.0_26-b03-384).

Same problem here. Random spinning ball, requires a reboot.
Matlab R2011b, Mac OS X 10.6.8, Macbook Pro late 2010, extended to 8Go RAM.

Same issue for me with MATLAB R2011b on Mac OS X 10.6.8, setting default graphic renderer to OpenGL and using OpenGL bug workarounds solved lots of crashs, but I still experience arbitrary crashs.

You could help us pinpoint whether there is an issue with your configuration or with MATLAB by obtaining a Sample of MATLAB when it's spinning indefinitely, and sending that to MathWorks Support. Use Activity Monitor (found in Applications > Utilities), select the hung MATLAB, click Sample, then save as a log file.
If it is happening frequently, do this more times to see if there is a pattern with the samples. If there is anything in the stack traces that points to an obvious configuration issue, consider doing something about that (for example, reinstalling the OS, or reinstalling Java), otherwise contact MathWorks Support with your log files, for further help and diagnosis.
