communication in Processor in the Loop Simulation

As a part of my Project, I have to perform Hardware in the loop testing to verify the code generated from my model. But how does a simulink model recognises the input given from the outside world or real time environment. Is there any specific blocks to be used in the model, to acquire the inputs from real time source and process it. or generally how a hardware in the loop testing can be done with simulink in the LOOP.
