A-L-V: Automating the Left Side of the V
Nate Rolfes, Ford Motor Company
John Broderick, Ford Motor Company
Jeffrey Cotter, Ford Motor Company
The V-model is a recognized representation of the software development process, and the “Left-side of the V” is typically the domain of up-front design and requirements development prior to the completion of software implementation. The presenters demonstrate how Simulink®, Stateflow®, and the Vehicle Network Toolbox™ have been utilized to automate the generation of model-based simulations for distributed systems, which can be used up-front for finding errors in requirements and system designs. Additionally, automated generation of interfaces to the CarSim vehicle dynamics tool has increased the scope and coverage of up-front distributed systems testing to include closed-loop vehicle controls simulations. Lastly, using Vehicle Network Toolbox as a co-simulation interface with the Qt™ UI Framework has enabled up-front simulation and rapid prototyping of production-quality HMI for the design of driver assistance features which depend upon “driver-in-the-loop” testing. These methods are shown as ways to utilize model-based systems engineering to automate and improve the effectiveness of system design and testing prior to the availability of software and hardware.
