Get an On-Demand License for MATLAB Parallel Server

If you have short-term needs for scaling, you may benefit from MATLAB Parallel Server™ on-demand licensing. Using on-demand licensing, you can scale on clusters and clouds and pay only for what you use.

When using MATLAB Parallel Server on-demand, MathWorks® will charge your credit card monthly, in arrears, for the accrued worker-hours of your compute jobs. You are solely responsible for any additional billing for infrastructure and resources that you may incur.

To determine if you are eligible to use on-demand licensing, refer to the requirements and availability section below.

Obtain an On-Demand License Through MATLAB

The Create Cloud Cluster workflow in MATLAB can automatically create a new MATLAB Parallel Server on-demand license for you.  If you already have access to a MATLAB Parallel Server online license, the Create Cloud Cluster workflow will automatically use that online license, instead of creating a new on-demand license.

If you are a student or staff at an educational institution with a Campus-Wide License, you will be automatically linked to your MATLAB Parallel Server online campus license and you will not need an on-demand license.

To access the Create Cloud Cluster workflow in MATLAB:

  1. Click the Parallel menu on the MATLAB toolstrip, then click Create and Manage Clusters.

Requirements

To be eligible for on-demand licensing with MATLAB Parallel Server, you need:

  • A valid license for MATLAB and Parallel Computing Toolbox™
  • A valid credit card that can be used for billing

    • The client and cluster machines must be able to make outgoing connections to any DNS name in the domain mathworks.com on port 443.

    To use MATLAB Parallel Server on-demand licensing, you must have a MathWorks Account and be associated as a licensed end user to the MATLAB Parallel Server license.

On-demand licensing is available in:

  • Americas: United States, Canada
  • Europe: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and United Kingdom

On-demand licensing is not available for Enterprise customers.

Alternatives to On-Demand Licensing

Campus-wide

For students and staff at an educational institution with a Campus-Wide License, MATLAB Parallel Server for Campus-Wide Licenses may already cover your needs and an on-demand license will not be necessary.

Annual and perpetual

If you are not eligible for an on-demand license and do not have access to a Campus-Wide License, or if you have long-term needs for scaling, then an annual or perpetual MATLAB Parallel Server license might better suit your needs. Contact Sales for more information.

Billing

MathWorks tracks your usage over a period of one calendar month and rounds up the accumulated software usage to the nearest worker-hour. Usage time is only accumulated when a pool of workers is open and/or when a job is running. With on-demand licensing, you will be billed for all usage and at a constant rate, regardless of how many workers you have checked out simultaneously. There is no cost to sign up, and you pay only for the time you use the software.

  • Standard: USD $0.06 per worker per hour
  • Educational: USD $0.02 per worker per hour

Getting Usage Reports

Using the License Center, you can download a usage report from the On-Demand tab by clicking On-Demand Usage History. This helps you monitor MATLAB Parallel Server usage.

Stopping Activity

You can stop all MathWorks billable activity on your cluster by deleting any running pools and jobs. You can check for running pools and jobs, and then stop them using the Job monitor.

Reducing Costs with Annual Licensing

If you regularly use more than 200 workers or your scaling needs span multiple months, consider purchasing an annual license for MATLAB Parallel Server.
