Installation with a proxy results in "Error -1: Unknown Service Error"

When I try to install MATLAB R2011a on a 64-bit Ubuntu 11.04 I get the following error after selecting the license:
Error -1: Unknown Service Error
If I continue the installation procedure and try to update the available software from the internet, I get the error:
There are no product available to install from this location.
The first part of the installation goes ok after I configure the proxy. The installer allows me to log in the Mathworks site and finds my license.
My guess is that this is related to proxy settings (and perhaps Java), since the same installer worked perfectly on my laptop in an open network without a proxy server.
Any ideas? Since I am installing the software on my desktop in our intitute's network, there is no option to do this without a proxy.

While it is not a solution, I get the same error on 64-bit debian squeeze when I am behind a proxy (haven't tried it without the proxy).
