i cant get the 'syms' function to work on my computer. if i transfer the same code to a school computer it works fine, any suggestions

The SYMS function is part of Symbolic Math Toolbox. Check the output of the VER function to determine if you have this product installed.

A license for the Symbolic toolbox is typically included in the Student Version license, but the product is not installed by default; you would need to go back to the installer and request it.
